Official TOEFL® Test

From August of 2019, ETS will change the TOEFL examination in the following ways:

Reading Section:
ETS will change the number of questions on each reading passage. In the past, there were 12 to 14 questions on each reading passage.
From August, there will be 10 questions on each reading passage.

Reading Section:
ETS will change the amount of time on the reading section. In the past, there was 60 minutes for 3 reading passages, and there was 80 minutes for 4 reading passages. From August, there will be 54 minutes for 3 reading passages, and there will be 72 minutes for 4 reading passages.

Reading Section: ETS will not change the types of questions in the reading section.

Listening Section:

  • ETS will change the number of lectures on the listening section. In the past, there were 4 to 6 lectures. From August, there will be 3 to 4 lectures.
  • ETS will not change the number of questions on each lecture. There will still be 6 questions on each lecture.
  • ETS will not change the number of conversations in the listening section. There will still be 2 to 3 conversations.
  • ETS will not change the number of questions on each conversation. There will still be 5 questions on each conversation.
  • ETS will not change the types of questions in the listening section.
  • ETS will change the total time of the listening section. In the past, the time was 60 to 90 minutes. From August, the time will be 41 to 57 minutes.

Speaking Section:
ETS will change the total time of the speaking section. In the past, the speaking section was 20 minutes with 6 speaking exercises.
From August, the speaking section will be 17 minutes with 4 speaking exercises.
ETS will remove Speaking Task 1 and Speaking Task 5 from the speaking section.

Writing Section: ETS will not change this section.

Score Report: ETS will change the score report. In the past, a test-taker got a score from the test that he or she just completed. From August, a test-taker will get two scores: Score 1 will be from the test that he or she just completed. Score 2 will be the best scores of the test-taker on each section of the test. These scores will come from all tests that he or she completed in the last two years.
